Owl Christening Cake Idea.
Owls are one of my favourite animals and I love the fact that they are now so popular in invitations and party designs.
Every where I look they are popping up and scrapbooking stores area filled with the cutest owl papers.
This is a softer version of my original Olivia the owl cake and more suitable as a Christening cake. Owl cakes work perfectly as well for little girls as they do for little boys as a Christening cake.
This is such an easy design to match to your theme and it is different to the usual round or square tiers with booties on them. If you have a large Christening the owl would look fabulous as a top tier or even as a top cake for a cupcake display.
Matching invitations is the perfect way to make your Christening unique especially if the invitations are handmade. It also makes the decisions easy as you automatically have the design details and the colours to match.
If you are interested in learning how to make your own owl cake then I do run this as a one day class more …
If you have not made a 3D cake before do not be intimidated it really is not difficult and this is the perfect design to start with.
Bye for now, I think I will go and make some cupcakes to match this owl cake!!

Cake decorating details class
These are the photos of the finished cake that will be made in the three day class to be held in February. The class covers everything from stenciling, embossing, piping, piped flowers, wired hydrangeas, lace detailing, quilting, brush embroidery, shimmering and more.
This cake will be foam underneath the fondant so you will be able to keep this as a display cake to show clients different finish effects.
You can find more details about the class and the dates by heading to the class tab or clicking here.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions about the class. It will be quite intense as we have a lot to cover but really it’s about how easy some of these design effects really are so please do not be intimidated at all.
The class also includes a fabulous heavy duty transport box and your own set of hydrangea cutters to keep.

Private cake decorating class – christmas cake
I have just spent a wonderful day giving a private class.
Taking advantage of it being Christmas we turned this beginners class cake into a gorgeous two tier cake with fondant Reindeer – although as they both have big red noses I’m assuming they are Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.
The colour scheme was kept to the traditional red, white and green and as time is limited in a one day class we played around ribbon combinations to finish the tiers.
We then created these cute fondant reindeer – both had curious looks on their faces and we had to take their antlers out for the trip home as they were not quite dry enough but luckily they held long enough for the photos!!
I have to say this was a pretty impressive result for a beginners class and I think we both thoroughly enjoyed the day.

number of cake serves when cutting a cake
I am often asked how to work out how many serves you get when cutting a cake.
This varies if the cake is round or square or if the cake is going to be served as dessert or a smaller piece with coffee.
I also take into account if the cake is going to be cut by a professional/caterer or it is going to be a family cake. A professional will more than likely get more serves out of the cakes than I have listed below but I think these numbers are a good guide.
The number of cake serves also takes into account that sometimes parts of a cake can not be serve for example the corners usually have too much icing and not enough cake to be served and if the cake has several tiers then some cake is lost because of the internal piers/poles etc
My cakes are usually finished to a height of 4″ and are filled with rich ganache so even small cake portions are quite rich and delicious.
Dessert sized cake portions = 2″ x 1″ and coffee sized cake portions = 1″ x 1″.
