How to photograph cakes Inspired by Michelle Cake Designs

I have been asked a couple of times lately how I take photos of my cakes.

I use a light tent with two lights either side. I have to admit that this suggestion came from my sister who is a photographer and the quality of my cake photos were driving her crazy – they still do but not quite as much!!

It all came as a kit including various coloured backgrounds (black, white red and blue) and I found it easily on ebay.

The tents come in different sizes and mine is tall enough to shoot a three tier cake with topper 80cm. I find it very easy to use and I have a cheap automatic digital camera nothing fancy. I just place the cakes inside turn the lights on and take a photo. I find the colours come up much stronger and clearer , the background is clean and my pictures now look uniform.

I really can see the difference in my cake pictures.

I have to admit when I first bought it I would spend time changing the angles of the lights and I used a tripod for the camera but now it is always a rush to take a photo before the cakes are delivered/picked up that I have the lights pointing away from the cake so it is even, the tripod has been put away and I quickly shoot three or four shots and that’s it!

Word of warning – make sure that the light globes that come with the kit can easily be replaced – mine were not and I was taking photos without the lights as they both happened to go at the same time and I could not find globes to sit within the mounting – in the end I just had to sit them inside the shield, still works!!

The other really good thing about this light tent is that it folds away flat and takes up very little space. I leave mine up and someone commented on how professional it is – well the table is actually an old door with an old curtain draped over it – but it works!!

I hope this was helpful.

Bye for now, Michelle

I used my light tent for the first time last night, and I am so happy with the results!!
I had seen this picture of yours earlier, and was on a mission to get my own.
For those looking around, I bought mine from http://www.avedia.com.au for $129 which came with three lights (2 sides and top), backgrounds and 80cm tent.
I can’t wait to get my little boys inside and take some “studio” pics of them too!
