Christening cake idea in red and gold

This Christening cake was designed for a little girl named Ruby.

The colour scheme for the day was red and gold when I delivered the cake red and gold balloons were being added as the table centrepieces and the cake fitted in perfectly. I don’t often get to see the cakes displayed for the celebrations but when I do I always walk away with a big smile on my face.

Red and gold were also on the invitation and it was the source for the gold banding on the bottom of both tiers. I simplified a design from the invitation and piped it in royal icing then finished it with gold.

The large red loopy fondant bow on top gave the cake extra height and a nice red focal point.

Of course this cake design would also work as a Baptism cake idea.

Cake decorating tip:

Remember if you are making fondant loopy bows to make them a week in advance so that they are completely dry otherwise they will not be strong enough for assembly or transporting. For this cake I had to dry the loops in the oven as it was raining all week and my studio humidity was higher than normal.

Bye for now, Michelle

Wow. Absolutely stunning. I love the simplicity. The bow is fantastic.

Once again, I’m in awe of your piping. When I first viewed this cake, I thought you must have used a stencil on the bands. You must do a video showing how you do such lovely writing and piping.

Thanks for your tips. I tried a bow once, and it failed dismally, to the point where I had to do a last minute design change. Very stressful. Do you use straight fondant or mix with CMC?

Thanks Tracey, when I make loopy bows I do add CMC to the fondant but when I make the tied bow I don’t bother.

I love your simple designs with stunning results, a truly amazing talent. I have never thought of popping icing in the oven to dry out – what a great idea.
I fail to get a striking red – is there a trick to this?
