50th birthday cake idea. I first made this design for my nephew Jasper’s 5th birthday and it has been a hit since.
This bright and colourful design is perfect as a birthday cake for men.
It also looks fantastic in all the colours of the rainbow, blues / browns and black white and silver. Another idea is to do the cake in team colours and have the club logo on the top.
The design works best with at least three colours.
Cake decorating tip:
The shape of these tiers is called “bucket”. This is a great way to start doing shaped cakes and is much easier than jumping straight into doing a mad hatter style.

Hi Michelle,
Love your cakes! Great inspiration for making my husband’s 40th birthday cake! Just wanted to know how you made the number toppers and whether you used a particular size cutter or template? Thanks!
Thank you!!! for the numbers they are fondant and CMC/Tylose to add strength that is rolled into tubes then cut and shaped into the numbers. Then I carefully add support wires in the end and leave to dry for a couple of days. The wires are then pushed in to the cake so that the numbers/letters stand up. Some shapes are difficult to add wires that remain hidden which is why sometime you will see stars, hearts or balls at the base of the number. You can also add some royal icing at the base for added strength especially if the cake is going to be transported. I hope that makes sense!!
