Inspired by Michelle Cake Designs colourful signature cake.
I just put this post together because I have had a lot of questions about how I made this cake. I should say first that I am a little embarrassed about the quality of the finish as at the time it was just an idea I was playing around with and I never expected to do anything with it. In the end I got such a lovely reaction that I ended up using it as my signature cake but usually only show it in a small image !!
The design for the cake came from a piece of fabric that I saw and loved at a craft show.
I covered the cake in the brown then I cut out some of the detail so I did not have too much thickness of icing and then layered some of the flower patterns. To be honest this took forever to do and it also took a fair bit of time making all the colours – I think the result is worth it but it is an expensive design to replicate time wise.
I covered the cake board in matching brown fondant and trimmed it in blue to match my business colours.
Ever since I made this colourful cake I have wanted to make a two tier version to display in my studio but I just never have time to make cakes for myself so it is on my long list of “things to do” !!!!
Cake decorating tip:
Material is a great design source as it teaches you colour combination and it creates the structure of your design. With a piece of fabric in front of you it is very easy to visualise your final design.
A big thank you for your kind words.
Bye for now, Michelle

hey there your cakes are lovely so very crisp and precise, do you have lettering cutters for the times font type lettering, if so where would one purchase such an item, i live in perth, and only make kids party cakes,, for MY children way to time consuming to make for others lovely cakes
ps i made a cake a bit like your flowery one i was going to send you a picture of it as i think you would like it but couldnt see a way to do it,,
Hi Gill I can be contacted at inspiredbymichelle@mail.com I would love to see your cake I’m thrilled you liked my design!!!!
Hi Gill, yes I use a ruler type lettering cutter that you tap out the letters. They are fairly easy to find and I’m sure someone on ebay probably has them for sale. If you can not find them in perth let me know as there is a cake supply shop in sydney that does mail order.
Hello Michelle,
). I do cakes on the side for family and friends and hope to someday do more. Thank you for taking time out of what I can only imagine is an extremely busy schedule and doing your videos and tutorials, beginners like me can not get enough. Thank you.
I just came across your page yesterday and have been having a ball going thru your tutorials and beautiful cake pictures (oops, hope my boss does not see me
Hi, Michelle.
I had the idea to do a similar cake for my father-in-law using a wild tie pattern. I just could not figure out how to get the fondant pieces to ‘puzzle’ together like I think you did here. Do you cut out once the fondant is on the cake, then just lay the next color over it and cut along so it fits? Do you do it flat first, then cover the cake? I’d like to see an up-close bigger photo of this cake so I can analyze it!
Thanks for all your advice and postings–I’ve watched your videos a couple of times already to learn from you!

Hi Debbie it is a combination of various methods. I cover the cake in brown first then some of the detail is laid over some is cutout the replaced etc With the cutouts i first have a cutter or template then cut out of the original brown on the cake then cutout the replacing colour then add this to the space on the cake. I hope that made sense!! It was a very very time consuming cake to do. Have fun! Bye for now, Michelle
