Dora cake for a 3rd birthday celebration with boots, swiper and backpack made in fondant.

This cake is really colourful and I really enjoyed making it but if you look at the base design then this is also a beautiful cake. With the simplicity of the red, two pinks and white design it works equally well and I think if it had a little red and pink ladybug on the top with the 3 then it would be perfect!!! but then I love ladybugs.

Adding the Dora Explorer characters has taken it to a whole new level and I can imagine a three year old’s eyes wandering over the cake and discovering the details on this two tier 3rd birthday cake.

Cake Decorating tip:

To make the stand up number just add some tylose (CMC) to fondant – mix through well and form the number. Add thick (20 gauge) florist wires into the base. I needed to add to pieces into this number 3 to keep it stable. You can hide the wires that show with flowers, figurine etc. When it is a straight number say a number 1 then you will not see the wire it’s only when the wires go into a curve. Leave flat on a board to dry overnight before adding to your cake.

Bye for now, Michelle

I’m a stay at home mom of 2 & 11 years old kids enjoying baking & decorating their cakes for their birthdays, for their teachers, etc. I love your site & appreciate very much that you share all your creatios & tips with everyone. Just have a question about the way to have a pretty & nice finish on your cake boards; do you always use fondant o cover the cake or do you use something else? I need ideas and thanks for the tips for the numbers just yours looks like rounded created by you & not with the cutters. The only way I know is copying & enlarging a number on a paper (from the cutter) and cut it with an exacto (knife).

Hi Adriana, thank you!! yes I use fondant on my cakes and my boards as the finish. The numbers are really quick and easy if you just roll out lengths of fondant (it needs CMC in it to harden while the numbers dry) so it is like a piece of smooth rope then shape into the number you need – no cutting out!!!
I hope that helps. Bye for now, Michelle

Hi Michelle,

What fantastic cake this is! I wish I can create 3D figures as perfect as yours in the future.

Just a quick question, qhat gauge of wire do you use for the stars? or are they lillipop sticks? thanks!

Hi Heather the prices change depending on the size of the cakes and the amount of detail in the design. I make the cakes in a size to match the number of guests you wish to serve. You can always email with questions at inspiredbymichelle@gmail.com although I am fully booked till early December at the moment. Thanks and bye for now, Michelle

I absolutely love your website and blogs.
Your cakes are absolutely amazing, such beautiful pieces of art it almost seems a shame to eat them.
The 3rd Birthday Dora cake is outstanding … my daughter turns three in a couple of months and her “life” is Dora, Boots and of course naughty Swiper.
