How to make a baby bottle cake? this post has come from a question that was left on my website. These cakes are really popular as baby shower cakes. I often get asked how I set up the cakes so I thought I might as well make the answer a post.

My name is Kagi, I am from Toronto, Canada and I am a huge fan of your cake designs! Your talent is endless and I love how you put such little details to create outstanding masterpieces. I just started making cakes myself a few months ago.
I was wondering if you would be able to help me out- I received an order for a 3D baby bottle cake and I was wondering how you staked the cake layers to make it stand up so well. I was thinking of stacking roughly 4 to 5 layers of 6 x 3″ cakes – did you have to dowel in each layer with a base? How did you create the top of the bottle? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated and I will definitely give you credit for the design after I create it!

- This is how I constructed the baby bottle cakes you can see in the image above.
- I baked two cakes (I think two of the bottle cakes in the image were 5″ round cakes and the other was 6″ round). My cakes are baked so that they finish at a height of 3″ after trimming. For this explanation I will say the cakes are 5″ round.
- I then cut the cakes into three layers and ganached them as individual cakes so I have two cakes. The bottom tier was ganached on a 5″ round board and the top tier on a 4″ round board. At this stage I have only ganached layers not the outside of the cake.
- I set them up so that there was supports in the bottom cake (you only need three) and then the top tier went into position.
- Then I shaped the top edge of the cake so that it was rounded.
- Then I ganached the outside of the cakes so now you have a perfect cylinder.
- This is then covered in rolled fondant.
- The cake was then positioned on a fondant covered board.
- The top of the bottle I make out of poly foam which I carve into shape then cover in fondant.
- When you serve the cake the top is removed. The top tier is sliced down to the middle board and served. The middle board is removed and the bottom tier sliced and served.
- I did have an order once when the cake need to serve a lot of guests so I used 8″ round cakes but I needed to bake three cakes to have the extra height to keep the design in proportion. In this instance I had a center pole to help support the cake especially for when the cake was transported.

Elny I use a small fine serrated blade from a saw and sand paper – very messy!!!
Hi Michelle, you are such an inspiration and thanks for sharing!!! Can you please tell me how you would secure the center pole? I am so scared that the pole/dowel may come off!
Hi Andrea, I use a hot glue gun to secure the pole into the base board. Drill a gole in the base board slightly larger than the pole you will be using and secure it n position with the hot glue – make sure the pole is straight before the glue sets!!
