This 50th birthday cake had a lot of thought put into it from the birthday girls family who wanted a gift box cake filled with her favourite things.
A present cake can be the solution when you are stuck for ideas on what design to have for a cake – especially for men!! All you need is about five or six favourite things to fill the box. All the items are made out of fondant.
In this case I was asked to make two alpacas and their blue ribbons, champagne bottle (only the top of the bottle shows), diamond tennis bracelet, pearls, iris flowers and boxing gloves.
Cake decorating tip:
The present lid for this 50th birthday cake is made out of foam covered in fondant then decorated with the bow. This was a 10″ square cake so I cut down a 10″ square cake foam to a slice that was 1″ thick. Then I hot glued the foam to a 10″ square cake board to finish the underneath. The the lid was chocolate ganached to give a surface for the fondant to stick to.
Bye for now, Michelle

Hi there,
I made a shoe box cake for a friend last month (this is a picture of it to illustrate http://on.fb.me/JLC2011 ) and once again I have found your website too late as the lid was awful but seeing as how I did the cake as a present my friend was chuffed to bits. I have bookmarked your site and will definitely be using it as a point of reference in the future. Pity you live in another country as I would have loved to have attended some of your classes too.
Thank you for the inspiration again
